Corey Haim : What are the consequences of drunk driving on auto insurance? Do you need sr22 insurance? I was recently charged with drunk driving.
Drunk driving, DUI insurance or SR22 insurance.
Response : Corey, I can understand the issues and the problems that you are facing at the moment. Well, unfortunately you will have to get dui insurance rate since now you have smeared your driving history. See more details here.
If you are convicted of drunk driving, in most states your automobile insurance rates are likely going to go up for at least three years and you will probably be learning at lot about something called SR-22.
Whether your state calls it driving under the influence, driving while intoxicated or operating a vehicle while intoxicated, if you are convicted of any of those offenses, chances are your insurance rates will increase before you are allowed to drive again.
Laws Vary by State
The penalties regarding drunk driving vary from state to state, but in every state if you are convicted of impaired driving, your driver’s privileges will be suspended for at least 30 days to one year, even on the first offense.
In most states, to get your driver’s license and privileges back, you will have to provide the licensing agency with an SR-22 form, which proves that you have motor vehicle liability insurance. Under SR-22 laws, the insurance company is required to notify the licensing agency, usually the department of motor vehicles, if the policy is canceled, terminated or lapses.
Your Premiums Could Triple
When you go to your auto insurance agency to get an SR-22 form, your company will consider you a “high-risk” driver and increase your insurance premiums. This is especially true if you were previously in a “preferred class” or received safe-driver discounts.
If you are convicted of drunk driving, your auto insurance premiums can double, and in some states, even triple. You may want to shop around; some companies specialize in high-risk policies.
Not All Companies Offer SR-22 Policies
Some insurance companies do not offer SR-22 insurance policies. If you are convicted of drunk driving and your company does not offer SR-22, the company will cancel or not renew your current policy. You will have to find another company that does offer SR-22 and when you do, you can count on your rates being higher, because then you would also have a cancellation on your claims history.
Some states have laws that prohibit insurance companies from canceling policies before the term expires, even if you are convicted of a drunk driving charge. Check the laws in your state.
Thanks.

Kate Hudson : Is it possible to get a SR22 without buying car insurance?
SR22 form without car insurance.
Response : SR 22 form is required when you have got involved in drunk driving or a very big auto accident. This is a financial responsiblity. You know that most states require car owners to buy a minimum amount of bodily injury and property damage liability insurance before they can legally drive their cars. All states have financial responsibility laws. This means that people involved in an automobile accident will be required to furnish proof of financial responsibility up to certain minimum dollar limits. To comply with financial responsibility laws, most drivers purchase automobile liability insurance.
You can buy a non-owners liability SR22 policy if you do not own a vehicle. Otherwise, you can make an SR22 filing in conjunction with your current or new auto insurance policy.
Sr22 form is sold by insurance companies and the best insurance companies who will give you affordable sr22 quotes, would be from the speciality insurance companies. The key again here is it pays to shop for sr22 online. You will get affordable or low sr22 forms or sr22 quotes.

Carie Underword : What is SR22 insurnace or SR22 form?
Response : This is a very common question and most of the normal drivers do not know about this. Simply stated, an SR-22 form is a document that shows proof of financial responsibility. You’ll need an SR-22 insurance if the police caught you driving without insurance, and you’ll be required to carry the SR-22 insurance or sr22 form for a specified amount of time (usually three years). Once you properly fulfill that time period, your SR-22 status expires.
SR-22s also are associated with the following:
• DUI or DWI or any serious moving violation
• At-fault accidents while driving without insurance
• Repeat traffic offenses or getting too many tickets in a short time period
• License suspension or revoked license
Once you fall in the trap of needing a SR22 form or SR22 insurance expect a long relationship with your SR-22 — most likely three years — similar to a probationary period after a criminal offense. You must carry continuous insurance during the specified period of time before SR-22 status is removed. If your policy lapses or is canceled, your auto insurance company is required to notify the state immediately and your license will be suspended again.
The insurer will cancel or terminate an SR-22 by filing a separate form with the state (an SR-26 in many states), generally 10 days before the SR-22′s expiration.
Thanks. Happy seasons greetings.

Andrea : What is SR-22 insurance?
Response : SR22 insurance is actually a form which is required before you are insured. High-risk drivers may be required to file a SR-22 (actually a form) with the state before the purchase of auto insurance. This requires the provider to notify the state should the policy be terminated or canceled. DUIs, multiple speeding tickets and driving without insurance or a valid license are all reasons a SR-22 may need to be filed. The requirement usually lasts for three years after the initial event.
SR-22 insurance is used differently in different states. An SR-22 insurance policy is generally a motor vehicle liability insurance policy required for reinstatement after your drivers license has been suspended or revoked. SR-22 insurance is uniquely suited for these situations, because it requires the insurance company to notify the department of motor vehicles if the policy is canceled, terminated, or lapses. If any of these things happen, your license will typically be suspended until the policy is brought current or reinstated. Under the laws of most states, you must carry SR-22 insurance for a certain period (often three years) after the end of your suspension or revocation.
Not all insurers offer SR-22 insurance. You may need to find an insurance company that specialized in high-risk drivers. Once you have purchased the insurance, you have to provide proof of SR-22 insurance to the department of motor vehicles before your license will be reinstated. Some states require you to present a copy of your SR-22 binder , while other states have an SR-22 form that can be used as a substitute for the actual insurance binder.
In some states, SR-22 is used strictly in DUI cases. Some states also require SR-22 insurance to prevent license revocation or suspension in certain cases–for example, if you have an uninsured accident or you get several tickets in a short period of time.

Fred : How long will I be punished for DUI? How will DUI affect my SR22 rates?
Response : Fred, the court-ordered probation for DUI offence usally last for 3 to 5 years. It is mandatory to be insured during this period and an SR-22 form must be maintained fro three years. During this period the offender must also not commit any criminal offenses, drive under influence of wine or alcohol, give a chemical test when requested and pay the fine for assessment or restitution.
When the underwriter rates the SR22 than the basic factors of consideration are like age, marital status, driving history, driving experience, the purpose of use of vehicle and your geographical area of residence. DUI and Sr22 is considered as a high risk and so there are few companies which underwrite this insurance and hence the premiums are high. The premium charged is approximately 30-40% higher than normal. Normally there are fewer companies who offer this coverage and that is another reason why the rates are high. SR-22 is only a certificate that proves you have met the states financial responsibility (insurance) requirements.
It is best to obtain comparative auto insurance quotes online which are generally available for free and save your money with cheaper or competitive auto insurance quotes.
