Auto insurance companies offer many affordable options to good drivers but when you are convicted of a DUI or DWI your auto insurance rates will change for some time. The main component of how much auto insurance costs is based on the risk of you filing a future claim and only a few events are considered higher risk than being convicted of a DUI or DWI.

How much is auto insurance after a DUI or DWI? Compare auto insurance quotes and get personalized rates today!

After a DUI or DWI conviction you will face many financial penalties including fines by the state, court costs, legal fees and more. While the majority of these costs will end within a year the effect of a DUI or DWI on auto insurance can last up to 3 years or more. Drivers can still find auto insurance with a driving under the influence conviction on their record but your choices will be much more limited than before.

What auto insurance companies offer coverage to drivers convicted of a DUI or DWI?

This really depends on where you live. While good drivers typically have a choice of 100 or more auto insurance companies you may have only a dozen or so to choose from after a DUI or DWI.

If you live in a state with a SR-22 form filing requirement it’s pretty easy to weed out the auto insurance companies who do not offer coverage since the SR-22 form has to be filed by the insurance provider. Any auto insurance company who does not offer a SR-22 form filing option cannot provide coverage to you. This is one way a lot of auto insurance companies avoid denying you coverage, they simply hide behind the “we don’t offer that service” line.

The most important thing in your search for auto insurance after a DUI or DWI is to stop feeling obligated that someone must insure you. The fact is all auto insurance companies are private companies and you have seriously broken traffic laws posing a risk to everyone. There is a penalty to pay for this, so focus on finding affordable auto insurance rather than complaining why nobody will give you reasonable rates. Affordable auto insurance is available but you will never pay the same as a good driver immediately after a DUI or DWI conviction.

Where do I find affordable auto insurance after a DUI or DWI?

Companies like Progressive and the General Auto Insurance offer very competitive rates and coverage for high risk drivers, and depending on where you live there are other national and local brands who will also extend coverage. You need auto insurance to drive a vehicle and don’t even think about driving with no insurance as this will only lead to a lifetime of court hearings. You may have to compromise on coverage limits and possibly even take higher deductibles but most drivers with a DUI or DWI go on and find auto insurance.

How much is auto insurance after a DUI?

You should expect to pay up to 200% or more of your current premiums once convicted of a DUI or DWI. Let’s say your auto insurance rates are now around $100 a month then high risk insurance is probably $200 or more a month for the same or less coverage. There is no such thing as cheap auto insurance after a DUI but premiums are still mainly affordable by most people.

When will my auto insurance rates improve?

This really depends on a number of factors. A DUI or DWI may end up staying on your record for up to 10 years however just like your credit score the effect will decrease over time. You may not get much cheaper auto insurance rates for a couple years but you can start building a better risk profile by avoiding traffic tickets, taking a defensive driver course, avoid filing claims and generally practicing being a good driver. At each renewal period you should always apply to other typical auto insurance companies just to compare quotes. The formula for calculating auto insurance rates change frequently and some drivers even find much more affordable car insurance after a year. The main focus is to simply build a good driving record and always compare auto insurance quotes a couple times a year. There is no charge to get a quote and the sooner you can get better auto insurance rates the more money you will save.

Jeff : How long will it take your your high risk auto insurance cost to go down once you have had speeding tickets?

Response : Speeding tickets is an indication to the insurance company or a red light flag that you are a high risk driver. Now, the second issue to consider here is if you have had speeding tickets which are more than one or just one ticket. If it is only one ticket than the auto insurance premium will increase by 10-15% per month or yearly. The record would stay on your books for 3 years by the insurance companies, but they will remain in your record for 7 years.

Now, if you have had more than three speeding tickets, than the normal market or personal line auto insurance companies will decline your application and you would have to go to the specialty market to be insured. The specialty market generally insurer this risk since they are the underwriters for high risk insurance. The auto insurance rates will be high and you will have to pay a much higher auto insurance premium than what you were paying to the personal auto insurer.

If you have speeding tickets than this are some steps or measures you need to take :

1)     Enroll yourself in a good defensive driving school.

2)     Get anti-brakes installed so that you are not able to speed.

3)     If you are driving a sports car than you need to change the model since you are more likely to speed in a sports car than an ordinary car.

4)     Learn to control to urge to speed.

Last but least you need to shop around for high risk auto insurance quotes and you will definitely get affordable auto insurance.

DUI in another state- DUI car insurance

DUI Car insurance

Ron: Does getting a DUI in another state affect your car insurance?

Response: Yes, this would certainly affect your car insurance. Each of the states reciprocates laws and procedures that allow them to share information pertaining to drivers in other state. Each insurance company has resources to check the driving records or the information on their own insured. Since you have a DUI record the risk category will change.

If you do not report the DUI to your carrier, which is a change, is a material change of your risk, the insurer has the right to deny your claim or cancel your policy on grounds of misrepresentation. You could have possible coverage issues if you have a loss and expect your carrier to pay out on it, not to mention the fact that your carrier could drop you altogether. This would look terrible on your record when you, say, go to get insurance from a different carrier. Your best bet is to simply own up to the DUI with your current carrier.

Once you own it up your insurer may increase the premium at renewal or ask you to go to another specialty insurance company. Remember that you can ask for your SR22 form if you insurer with a company which specializes in DUI car insurance. You can shop around for free SR22 car quotes and obtain affordable rates.

Gary: How do the insurance classify divers requiring high risk car insurance?

Response: The insurance companies decide the rating for any product based on the classification of the risk.  In auto insurance some of the risk is more prone to accidents than other risks. The high risks for car insurance are:

  • Persons with DWI or DUI on their record are the first to be considered as high risk. This is high liability risk.
  • If an individual has gap in the car insurance coverage.
  • Speeding tickets and a bad driving record would be considered a negative point for auto insurance and shoot up your car insurance quote.
  • Persons having a bad credit history are also considered as a high risk. The statistical data has proved that persons with a bad credit history are likely to place a claim more than one with a good credit history.
  • Individuals who have had a number of claims in a given year. This is an indication that the person is not a good driver or careless, thus the frequency of claims is going to be higher for this person.
  • Teenagers buying auto insurance are considered a greater risk than adults, so young drivers will almost always pay more for car insurance.
  • First time drivers also pay more for the auto coverage, regardless of their age, making cheap auto insurance a dream.
  • Men are considered more prone to accidents than woman and so are considered a higher risk.
  • Persons driving in the urban areas are more likely to have accidents than in rural areas. This is because of the traffic congestion.

Being classified as a high risk is not a problem. Compare auto insurance quote and follow the tips for reducing premium.
